Virtual Intensive Outpatient Program (VIOP)

How It Works & What to Expect

Our Virtual Intensive Outpatient Program (VIOP) delivers the same evidence-based addiction treatment as our in-person IOP — but through a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform you can access from anywhere. You work with the same licensed clinicians (LPCs, LCSWs, and LCDCs) who lead our on-site groups, using the same curriculum. The only difference is you log in from home instead of driving to our Killeen facility.

Same Clinical Depth, Greater Accessibility

At Virtue Recovery Killeen, our VIOP runs 3 days per week, 3 hours per session. Each session combines group therapy, individual counseling check-ins, and psychoeducation — covering CBT, DBT, Seeking Safety, SMART Recovery, and relapse prevention. You get real-time interaction with your therapist and peers, not pre-recorded videos.

  • 3 days per week, 3 hours per session via secure video
  • Licensed clinicians: LPCs, LCSWs, and LCDCs
  • Evidence-based curriculum: CBT, DBT, Seeking Safety, SMART Recovery
  • Relapse prevention planning and coping skills
  • Individual counseling sessions included
  • Group therapy with real-time peer interaction

Who VIOP Is Built For

Virtual IOP is ideal for people who have completed residential treatment and returned home, active-duty military stationed at or near Fort Cavazos, working professionals who cannot take time off for in-person sessions, and residents of rural Central Texas communities where driving to Killeen multiple times per week is not practical. If you have a private space and a reliable internet connection, you can participate fully.

Insurance and TRICARE Coverage

Most major insurance plans cover virtual IOP at the same rate as in-person IOP, including TRICARE. Our admissions team verifies your benefits before treatment begins so you know exactly what to expect. There is no difference in clinical quality — and many insurers now prefer telehealth options for outpatient-level care.

Recovery is possible. Our team is here to guide you every step of the way.

Evidence-Based Treatment

How We Treat. Not Just Where.

Our comprehensive clinical approach combines evidence-based therapies with holistic modalities, creating a personalized treatment plan that addresses the whole person.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy(CBT)

Evidence-based approach that helps identify and change negative thought patterns and behaviors driving addiction. CBT equips you with practical skills to manage triggers, cope with cravings, and build healthier responses to stress.

Trauma-Informed Care

Specialized treatment addressing underlying trauma that often fuels substance use disorders. Our trauma-informed approach recognizes that PTSD and addiction frequently co-occur, and uses evidence-based therapies like Seeking Safety, trauma-focused CBT, and mindfulness-based grounding techniques to help process traumatic experiences safely.

Group Therapy

Regular clinical groups building connection, accountability, and shared recovery. Group therapy provides a supportive community where you can learn from others' experiences, practice interpersonal skills, and develop the peer support network essential for long-term sobriety.

Individual Therapy

One-on-one sessions with licensed clinicians tailored to your specific needs. Individual therapy provides a confidential space to explore personal challenges, process emotions, work through past traumas, and develop a personalized strategy for sustained recovery.

Dual Diagnosis Treatment

Integrated treatment for co-occurring mental health conditions like anxiety, depression, PTSD, and bipolar disorder. Our psychiatric team works alongside licensed chemical dependency counselors (LCDCs) and licensed professional counselors (LPCs) to address both conditions simultaneously, which has been shown to produce better outcomes and reduce relapse risk.

Relapse Prevention

Practical coping strategies, trigger identification, and sustainable planning for long-term recovery. Our relapse prevention programming helps you recognize warning signs, develop healthy responses to high-risk situations, and build a comprehensive plan for maintaining sobriety after treatment.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy(DBT)

DBT focuses on emotional regulation, distress tolerance, mindfulness, and interpersonal effectiveness. Especially effective for individuals with intense emotions and co-occurring borderline personality disorder, DBT teaches practical skills to manage overwhelming feelings without turning to substances.

Equine Assisted Therapy

Therapeutic interaction with horses builds trust, emotional awareness, and communication skills. Killeen contracts with trained equine therapy instructors to provide experiential sessions that help clients develop confidence, self-regulation, and healthy relationship patterns outside the traditional clinical setting.

SMART Recovery

Self-Management and Recovery Training (SMART) is a science-based alternative to 12-step programs. SMART Recovery focuses on four key areas: building and maintaining motivation, coping with urges, managing thoughts and behaviors, and living a balanced life — empowering you to take control of your recovery.

Holistic Therapies

Our holistic therapy offerings include Sound Healing, Yoga, Music & Art Therapy, and Dog/Pet Therapy. These mind-body approaches complement clinical treatment by reducing stress, promoting emotional expression, improving physical wellness, and supporting whole-person healing throughout the recovery process.

Seeking Safety

Present-focused therapy designed for co-occurring trauma and substance use disorders. Seeking Safety teaches practical coping skills across cognitive, behavioral, and interpersonal domains without requiring clients to revisit traumatic memories before they are ready, making it a safe entry point for trauma recovery.

Matrix Model

A structured outpatient treatment approach combining CBT, family education, 12-step facilitation, drug testing, and relapse prevention into an integrated framework. The Matrix Model provides a clear, organized structure that helps clients build self-esteem, restore dignity, and develop a drug- and alcohol-free lifestyle.

Virtual Intensive Outpatient Program (VIOP) FAQ

Common questions about our virtual intensive outpatient program (viop) at Virtue Recovery Killeen.

Is virtual IOP as effective as in-person IOP?

Yes. Research published in the Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment shows that virtual IOP produces comparable outcomes to in-person IOP for substance use disorders. At Virtue Recovery Killeen, our VIOP uses the same licensed clinicians, the same evidence-based curriculum (CBT, DBT, Seeking Safety, SMART Recovery), and the same session structure as our on-site IOP. The only difference is the delivery method.

What technology do I need for virtual IOP?

You need a device with a camera and microphone (laptop, tablet, or smartphone), a reliable internet connection, and a private space where you can participate without interruption. Our team at Virtue Recovery Killeen provides a brief tech orientation before your first session and offers technical support throughout the program to ensure a smooth experience.

Does TRICARE cover virtual IOP?

Yes, TRICARE covers virtual IOP services. Given our proximity to Fort Cavazos, Virtue Recovery Killeen regularly works with active-duty service members and military families using TRICARE benefits for telehealth addiction treatment. Our admissions team verifies your specific TRICARE plan and explains your coverage before treatment begins.

How is virtual IOP structured at Virtue Recovery Killeen?

Our VIOP runs 3 days per week, with each session lasting 3 hours. Sessions include a mix of group therapy, psychoeducation modules (CBT, DBT, relapse prevention), and periodic individual counseling check-ins. You log in to our secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform at your scheduled time and participate in real-time with your therapist and peers.

Can I switch between virtual and in-person IOP?

Yes. At Virtue Recovery Killeen, we offer flexibility to transition between virtual and in-person IOP based on your needs. If your schedule changes, you relocate closer to our facility, or you simply prefer face-to-face sessions, our clinical team can adjust your treatment plan. The curriculum and clinical team remain the same either way.
